Trados GroupShare 2017 SR1
Symptoms/Context

During the installation/update of Trados GroupShare 2017/2020 SR1 you notice that the SQL database that holds your Translation Memory Container has not been updated.

Another symptom you might encounter because of no obvious error during the upgrade is that Trados Studio displays the following error message when you create a new Translation Memory or while you translate:

The database contains data in an outdated format which cannot be automatically migrated to the current schema. Please contact technical support.
Resolution

IMPORTANT: Follow the steps below to manually upgrade the databases only if you are an SQL specialists and only after you have created a backup of your databases.

Step 1:

  1. Access the Trados GroupShare WebUI and log in with an administrative account.
  2. Go to the Infrastructure > Containers view.
  3. Note down the database name of the affected container. In the example below TMCONT1:

Step 2:

  1. Access the system that holds your MS SQL database and make sure the user you log in with has appropriate permissions to make changes to the database(s).
  2. Open MS SQL Management Studio.
  3. Find the database for the TM Container you noted down in Step 1.
  4. Under Tables, find the table called dbo.parameters.
  5. Right-click on dbo.parameters and open the table by using select TOP 1000 Rows.
  6. In the second value row, check the version number for your TM Container database. If it shows 8.13, it has not been updated:

Step 3:

  1. Access the system that hosts the Trados Groupshare installation and go to C:\ProgramData\Package Cache\SDL\SDLStudioGroupShare2014_SP2\SQLScripts\SQLServer.
  2. Copy the following script TMServer-Upgrade-8.13-to-8.14.mssql.sql to a temporary directory on your SQL System. You will need this script to manually upgrade the container database from 2014 SP1 to 2014 SP2

Step 4:

  1. Go back to the system that holds your MS SQL database and make sure your focus is set to your TM Container database.
  2. In MS SQL Management Studio click on File > Open and browse to the script file you copied before.
  3. Highlight and open all the script file TMServer-Upgrade-8.13-to-8.14.mssql.sql. This will open a new tab.
  4. Go to the tab with the script that goes from 8.13 to 8.14.
  5. Make sure your focus is still on your TM Container database and then click Execute:

Root Cause
This can occur when your Trados GroupShare TM Container holds a large number of translation memories. During the installation the default SQL time-out of 30 seconds for the database connection is applied. Therefore the update may fail for the container database.
Reference
Trados GroupShare error: StorageVersionDataOutdated - The database contains data in an outdated format which cannot be automatically migrated to the current schema.
Upgrading might take a while, depending on how many Translation Memories are in the container. When the script finishes, the Messages pane shows that the upgrade was successful.
