Symptoms/Context
You have bilingual text in Microsoft Excel or CSV format in columns of source and target text. You want to create a translation memory based on this text for SDL Trados Studio.
Resolution

In this sample scenario, we use one CSV file with columns of English and German. Each column contains text in a pair like this, and separated by a comma. CSV format can be created by Microsoft Excel or other similar applications.

Apply some settings in Studio

You first need to apply some settings to open the CSV file:

  2. Click Tools > Options.
  3. In the Options dialog box, navigate to File Types > Comma Delimited Text (CSV) > Format.
  4. In the right pane, enable First line is column headings.
  5. In this scenario, we will leave the other settings as per the default to keep things simple.
  6. Click OK to close the dialog box.

Open the CSV files in Studio

Once the settings are applied, you can open the CSV in a new project:

  1. Create a new project by clicking File > New > Project.
  2. In the New Project wizard, proceed to the Project Languages page by clicking Next.
  3. Select English (United States) in Source Language, and German (Germany) in Target Languages. Then click Next.
  4. On the Project Files page, add the CSV file and click Next. Confirm that the Usage column is set to Translatable.
  5. On the Translation Memory and Automated Translation page, create a new translation memory for English (United States) to German (Germany) by clicking Create. Confirm that the Update column is enabled for the translation memory.
  6. Click Next several times to proceed to the Project Preparation page.
  7. On the Project Preparation page, select Prepare without project TM in Task Sequence list, then click Finish.

Once these steps are complete, you can create a new project for the CSV with a new translation memory. You can open the CSV in the Editor View as well as the usual projects.

Update translation memory

Using this project, you can update a translation memory with these bilingual files:

  1. In the Projects view, right click on the project, then click Batch Tasks > Finalize.
  2. In the Batch Processing wizard, click Next several times to proceed to the Settings page.
  3. On the Settings page, navigate to Language Pairs > All Language Pairs > Batch Processing > Translation Memory Updates.
  4. Enable Not Translated in the right pane, then click Finish.

Once the wizard has finished the process, the translation memory contains those source and target text.

Root Cause
SDL Trados Studio can handle CSV files which contain columns for source and target language text, and can update a translation memory with this text. As a result, you can convert from the bilingual CSV files to translation memories.
Reference
If the CSV is not recognized as translatable, save the file as UTF-8 encoding by using any text editor.
