Error message when adding or editing terms: The page you are viewing uses Java

Scope/Environment
Symptoms/Context

SDL MultiTerm or SDL Trados Studio displays the following error message when you try to add or edit a term:

The page you are viewing uses Java. More information on Java support is available from the Microsoft website

Resolution

Try the following solutions from the top to the bottom.
 

Solution 1 - Enable Java content in your browser

  1. Close all SDL applications.
  2. Open the Java Control Panel (see the Note section about how to open the Java Control Panel)
  3. Click on the Security tab.
  4. Check the Enable Java content in the browser box.

     
     
  5. Click Apply to confirm the changes and press OK to close the Java Control Panel.

If the problem still appears, check Solution 2.

 

Solution 2 - Enable the Java(tm) Plug-In SSV helper add-on in Internet Explorer

  1. Close all SDL applications.
  2. Open Internet Explorer.
  3. Click on the settings gear to open the Tools menu.

     
     
  4. Choose Internet Options from the drop-down list.
  5. Click Programs > Manage add-ons to open the Manage Add-ons dialog.
  6. Choose Toolbars and Extensions and scroll down in the list to Oracle America, Inc..
  7. If the status for the Java(tm) Plug-In SSV helper and Java(tm) Plug-In 2 SSV helper is disabled, right-click and choose Enable.
  8. Click Close to close the Manage Add-ons dialog.
  9. Click OK to close the Internet Options and close the Internet Explorer.

If the problem still appears please go on with the Solution 3.

 

Solution 3 - Reinstall the relevant Java version

  1. Go to:
    • Windows Vista/7: Start > Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
    • Windows 8: Right-click on the screen at bottom-left corner and choose the Control Panel > Uninstall a Program.
  2. Locate the Java Runtime Environment installations and uninstall all existing Java versions.
  3. Restart your PC.
  4. To install the prerequisite version of Java, run the SDL Studio or SDL MultiTerm installer again. This will run the installation of Java when it is not detected on your system. All other components that are already installed are skipped.
  5. Download the offline installer of the latest Java version from here: Java for Windows - Offline Installation
Root Cause
This message can have multiple causes. The known problems are:

- The Java content in browser is not activated in the Java Control Panel.
- The Java (TM) SSV helper is not enabled in your Internet Explorer.
- The Java installation is corrupt.

How to find/open the Java Control Panel

  • Windows XP:
    1. Click Start > Control Panel.
    2. Double-click on the Java icon to open the Java Control Panel.
  • Windows 7/Vista:
    1. Click Start > Control Panel.
    2. In the Control Panel Search, enter Java Control Panel.
    3. Click on the Java icon to open the Java Control Panel..
  • Windows 8:
    1. Use Search to find the Control Panel
      1. Press [Windows_Key+W] to open the Search
      2. Or move the mouse pointer to the bottom-right corner of the screen, then click on the Search icon.
    2. Enter: Java Control Panel
    3. Click on the Java icon to open the Java Control Panel.

 

If Internet Explorer does not open

There is a known bug/symptom for Internet Explorer that blocks it from opening. When you click on the Internet Explorer shortcut (to open it), Internet Explorer shortly flashes but does not open.

To fix this problem:

  1. Press [Windows Button + R] to open the Run... dialog.
  2. Type inetcpl.cpl and press OK to open the Internet Options.
  3. Click on Programs > Manage add-ons to open the Manage Add-ons dialog.
  4. Disable all add-ons with a right-click on each of the listed entries and choose Disable.
  5. Click Close to close the Manage Add-ons dialog.
  6. Click OK to close the Internet Options.
