XPP: Can delivered Helvetica fonts be used for publication purposes?

000022875 |11/26/2024 10:18 PM
Scope/Environment
XPP
Question
We have downloaded the RWS fonts module and noted that RWS provides 35 PostScript fonts in Type 1 ASCII format for immediate use upon installation of XPP. However, it’s unclear whether this includes the right to use Helvetica Narrow specifically for publication purposes.

Does our current license cover publishing with Helvetica Narrow or is additional licensing required?

Answer
NO! Effective in 2024, RWS is no longer distributing the 35 PostScript Type 1 Fonts for use with XPP. Any customer that wishes to use any Type 1 fonts needs to purchase the appropriate license from a font vendor. Note that Adobe has stopped support for these fonts in several of their applications. Details can be found on the Adobe web site here:
PostScript Type 1 fonts end of support

We currently deliver some open source "Noto" fonts with our XPP installer. We provide these for use with our XPP application to verify the installation and for use with some of our specific application jobs, e.g., exception dictionary jobs. RWS cannot guarantee the fonts we deliver are production quality and we encourage all of our customers to purchase their own fonts for production use.
