Does Trados Studio 2024 open WorldServer WSXZ packages, including packages exported from projects segmented with Legacy/Idiom filters?

Scope/Environment
WorldServer
Question

Support for WSXZ packages in Trados 2024 and beyond is our primary concern. We've observed that WSXZ packages come in two types, depending on the filter used:

  1. When using an FTS filter, the WSXZ package contains a .sdlxliff file.

  2. When using a legacy filter, the WSXZ package contains a .xlf file.

The second type is of particular concern to us, as we rely on legacy “NT” filters and our custom filters developed using the SDK.

Answer
Trados Studio 2024 handles WSXZ packages exported from projects segmented with Idiom/Legacy filters exactly as in earlier Studio versions. So yes, in Trados Studio 2024, you will be able to open such WorldServer packages.

However, we would like to point out that the integration of such filters with Trados Studio has not been developed or improved for a very long time. These filters have not been supported for over 10 years, will not be enhanced, and defects will not be fixed. On the other hand, Studio File Types are constantly being enhanced, with ongoing efforts to fix defects and add support for additional file formats.

We strongly recommend migrating Idiom filters to Studio File Types, as they could become obsolete in the future. To be clear: there are no immediate plans to remove them from the WorldServer User Interface. But it is advisable to make the transition to the latest technology and away from unsupported filters sooner rather than later. The RWS Professional Services Team can assist in this process if required.
